The Roof Tour Experience takes place on Saturdays at 11.00 and 14.00.

On the tour our guide will tell you the story of St John of Beverley and how tradition has it that he influenced King Athelstan to give Beverley the ‘right of sanctuary’. You will see medieval stained glass, the Saxon fridstool and the Norman font. Your guide will explain why a relatively small town has a parish church that is larger than many cathedrals.

On our Roof Tour you will be escorted up a medieval spiral staircase, with 113 steps, to the rafters of the roof. You will be able to take in the view to the north and to the south through our ‘wheel’ windows. You will be shown our treadwheel and the central boss will be lifted to reveal a stunning view of the floor below.

There are some uneven floor surfaces. For safety reasons please wear suitable footwear – no open-toed sandals/flip-flops.
There are 113 steps to climb in a narrow space on the roof tour.
Please make your own assessment of your suitability for this tour. It is not recommended for people with heart or breathing problems, or who may suffer from anxiety in narrow spaces. Note: For your safety the tour area is fully enclosed and all areas have secure barriers.
At their discretion, tour guides may refuse entry on health and safety grounds.

We welcome school groups and bespoke activities will be discussed with the school organiser to ensure that the required aspects of the curriculum are covered. We invite teachers to lead their own activities using the resources developed as part of our Sanctuary Project and which are available to download or to view.
