STUDY DAY

‘THE APPRECIATION OF STAINED GLASS’

Speaker: Roger Willson

Venue: Peter Harrison Room, Beverley Minster, Minster Yard North, HU17 0DP

Includes morning coffee/tea, a buffet lunch on the premises and tea/coffee in the afternoon

Cost per person: £20 (£15 for Minster Friends and Friends of St Mary’s, Beverley)

The study day will be concerned less with the overall history of stained glass or with the techniques involved in its creation as in trying to encourage participants to develop their skills in looking at and appreciating more deeply the glass which is to be found particularly in our parish churches. The day will concentrate on these rather than cathedrals. It is all too easy to see stained glass as just being there as part of the ‘fixtures and fittings’ rather than to take time to work out what it is showing and why it is showing it. This applies especially to the huge amount of Victorian and 20th century stained glass which inevitably confronts any visitor. Hopefully the day will encourage you to go out and to explore anew the feast of glass all around us and to appreciate it for its content, its artistry and its style.

The day will be divided into four ‘sessions’:

1.   Medieval stained glass in parish churches: what does the little that survives tell us?

2.   How we might look afresh at Victorian stained glass.

3.   The stained glass of the Arts and Crafts period and of the post-war ‘Yorkshire School’.

4.   The contemporary scene: English stained glass since from the mid 1950s to the present day.

There will be an optional 30 to 40 minutes extra session at the end of the study day which will take the form of a meditative journey with modern stained glass accompanied by suitable background music.
