FRIDAY 17 APRIL 2015

10.00 – 16.00

FRIENDS OF BEVERLEY MINSTER STUDY DAY

‘The Golden Age of the Northumbrian Church’

Four lectures by Professor Joyce Hill

1 Missionaries, Saints and Scholars: The Conversion of the Kingdom

2 Missionaries, Saints and Scholars: After the Synod of Whitby

3 The Churches and their Treasures

4 Glorifying the Word of God: The Wonder and Workmanship of  Manuscripts

The first two lectures focus on the missionaries, saints and scholars of the seventh and eighth centuries who brought Christianity to the Kingdom of Northumbria, and who built it up to be such an outstanding centre of Christian art and learning,

The third lecture looks at what we know about the churches and monasteries they built and the treasures with which they were beautified, drawing attention to where we can go today to see some of that evidence for ourselves in Yorkshire and County Durham.

The fourth lecture examines the traditions of manuscript production and illumination in the Northumbrian Church, illustrating the richness of the international influences and their commitment to the physical glorification of the Word of God, by which they were inspired.

Each lecture is illustrated and each lasts about 45-50 minutes, so allowing time for questions. There is a natural break (for lunch) between the second and third lecture.

Venue: – Peter Harrison Room, Minster Yard North, Beverley HU17 0DP

Cost per person: £30 (Friends £25) (including buffet lunch and morning and afternoon refreshments).
