Advent Retreat

‘THY KINGDOM COME’ – LONGING AND FULFILMENT

AN ON-LINE RETREAT FOR ADVENT

USING THIS MATERIAL

We tend to associate the idea of a retreat with going away for a few days to a retreat house somewhere in the countryside. But the idea of a ‘Retreat at Home’ is a well established one especially for people who don’t have the time or the resources for a residential retreat. At the moment, with the Coronavirus restrictions, that means most of us.

This material is intended to help you make a retreat in your home, in your own time during Advent, a season of preparation. After the Introduction it is set out in a series of units so you can use the material flexibly to suit your needs and particular pressures. You might want to use it over a series of days or, if you are able, to carve out one Quiet Day.

The material is interactive in the sense that it invites you to make a series of explorations. There will be suggestions of Bible passages and prayers to use and some music to aid your reflections. However, you can also add in your own material as you see fit. A good way to read a Bible passage on a retreat like this is to read it through slowly a couple of times. See if a particular verse or phrase leaps out at you. If it does then stay with it for a while and see what it is saying to you. That way, to use words from the prayer for Bible Sunday, you can ‘read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them.’

Keep praying during the retreat. As our new Archbishop Stephen Cottrell wrote a few weeks ago, ‘Prayer changes things. It changes things by inviting God into the room.’

Prayer

God of power,
you are strong to save
and you never fail those who trust in you;
keep us under your protection
as we undertake this Advent retreat,
and spread abroad your reign of peace
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Music

Handel’s Messiah – ‘Comfort, ye, comfort ye, my people’
