Church Mission Society

The Church Mission Society (CMS) focuses evangelistic mission and works in 60 countries around the world. It has a presence in 18 African countries and in 24 countries throughout Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia. It is also active in South and East Asia, and has recently joined forces with the South American Mission Society (SAMS).

CMS, founded in 1799, is a voluntary association of people rooted in the Anglican Communion, and today there are about 150 mission partners in 26 countries. They aim “to share God’s love with people of all races and to gather them into the fellowship of Christ’s Church”.

For over 150 years SAMS made Christ known among the people of South America. Indigenous churches, now led by their own people have been strengthened by modern translations of the Bible in their own language, and supported in their struggle to survive as indigenous cultures. Beverley Minster has strong links with CMS, particularly through St Peter’s Cathedral in Kabale, South West Uganda, and Bishop Nick Drayson (formerly of the Minster)  in Northern Argentina.
