Bible Society

Beverley Minster supports the Bible Society.

In 2004 the Bible Society celebrated its bicentenary in St. Paul’s Cathedral; William Wilberforce and other members of the Clapham Sect were instrumental in forming the Bible Society in 1804. Now it is part of a global alliance of over 130 Bible Societies around the world making the Bible available, relevant and credible in a wide range of cultures. Recently for example following a new openness in China, United Bible Societies reached an understanding with the Amity Foundation, a Chinese Christian initiative and since 1987 over 30 million copies of the Bible have been printed and distributed. Also the Bible Society quickly responded to the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe and helped to fund and supply Bibles in 20 countries.

The work and history of the Bible Society is set out in its website at www.biblesociety.org.uk
